David E Henning

September 12, 1954 — March 22, 2025

David Edward Henning, beloved father, Papa, and friend to all, peacefully left this life to be with the Lord on March 22nd at the age of 70. He was born on September 12th, 1954 in Eads, Colorado, to Edna and Lyle Henning. He spent his youth playing baseball and farming with his family. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1973.

In 1978, Dave moved to Nebraska and found his forever home in Chappell. He welcomed his son, Shaun, in 1979, followed by his daughter, Kelli, in 1982. Over the years, he worked for Ray Ranch, then Co-op, and later for the Union Pacific Railroad, forming lifelong friendships at each place.

Dave's life was a testament to kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for those around him. His greatest joys came with the births of his five grandchildren-Austin, Kendall, Eli, Emerson, and Alex-who lovingly called him Papa and Papa Apple.

With a big smile for everyone he met, Dave had a heart that knew no limits. He never hesitated to help others, always willing to give his last dollar to someone in need. He believed in second chances and saw the good in people, never speaking ill of anyone. His selflessness and understanding made him a trusted friend and confidant to so many.

Dave loved his family beyond measure and was endlessly proud of their accomplishments. He made sure they knew how much he loved them, never missing an opportunity to share his pride and affection. His love extended to his small community, where he found joy in its people, their stories, and the connections he built over the years.

Blessed with the gift of gab, Dave could strike up a conversation with anyone, making friends wherever he went. Whether talking with family, old friends, or a stranger who quickly became a friend, he had a way of making people feel seen and valued.

Though our hearts are heavy with his passing, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy of love, kindness, and generosity will live on in all who were lucky enough to know him. We can only hope to live like Dave.

Dave is survived by his son, Shaun Henning, and daughter-in-law Johnna; his daughter, Kelli Soucie, and son-in-law, Matt; and his beloved grandchildren, Austin, Kendall, Eli, Emerson, and Alex. He is also survived by his sister and best friend, Jonell Lening, and brother-in-law Don; his brother, Greg Henning, and sister-in-law Nancy; his niece Kim Oxley; nephews Mike Lening, Kevin Lening, Lyle VanBuskirk, Brad VanBuskirk, Mark VanBuskirk, Ryan Henning, and Cody Henning, all of whom lovingly called him DD; as well as many great-nieces, great-nephews, numerous cousins, and countless friends.

Dave was preceded in death by his father, Lyle Henning; mother, Edna Pederson; stepfather, Darrell Pederson; sisters, Mary Lee VanBuskirk and Betty Henning; and nephew, Steven Henning.
