Dennis Dale Zimmerman

Dennis Dale Zimmerman, age 64 of Big Springs, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the Sedgwick County Hospital in Julesburg, Colorado.

Dennis was born March 12, 1947 at Julesburg, Colorado, the son of Ralph and Opal (Skinner) Zimmerman. He was one of three children. He went to country school before attending middle school and high school in Big Springs. Dennis graduated from Kearney State College in 1970 with a degree in Business Administration.

He married Judy Whitten on August 27, 1967 at Julesburg. The couple had three children, Brian, Stacy and Thomas Zimmerman. The family lives near the Zimmerman family homestead west of Big Springs.

Dennis served on the Wheat Belt Public Power Board of Directors for 33 years and served as President of the board for 5 years. Dennis also served as President of the Nebraska Rural Electric Association for 2 years and served as Chairman of the Midwest Electric Association the past 2 years. In September of 2010 Dennis was one of twelve individuals recognized in the State of Nebraska for his contributions to the growth of public power. He also kept busy with the Ducks Unlimited organization for 10 years and serving on the Deuel County Fair Board for 25 years. Dennis was an active member of the Big Springs United Methodist Church where he served on many church boards. Dennis loved to spend time with his family, hunting with his boys and watching football.

Survivors include his wife, Judy of Big Springs; three children, Brian Zimmerman of Big Springs, Stacy and husband Brad Brandt of Broomfield, CO and Tom and wife Becky Zimmerman of Lincoln, NE; two grandchildren, Tyler and Jackson Brandt of Broomfield, CO; one sister, Patsy Whittier of Commerce City, CO; and other friends and relatives including his brother and sister in laws and nieces and nephews; his Wheat Belt extended family and a close family friend, Richard and wife Barb Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Opal Zimmerman; a brother, Jimmy, who had polio; and a brother in law, Jack Whittier.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 17th at the Big Springs United Methodist Church with Pastor Joy Savage officiating. Inurnment will be in the Big Springs Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church in his memory. Online condolences may be sent at gubserfuneralhome.com. Gubser Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge of arrangements.
