Dorothy A. Wellman, age 98, a longtime Ogallala resident, passed away Tuesday morning, December 6, 2011 in Valparaiso, Nebraska.
Dorothy was born April 22, 1913 at Petersburg, Nebraska, the daughter of Fred and Catherine (Schlipf) Wellman. The family lived in Petersburg, Pittsville, Wisconsin and Sidney, Nebraska before moving to Ogallala in 1917.
Dorothy graduated from the Ogallala High School with the class of 1931. She attended Chadron State College, Kearney State College and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Chadron State College. Dorothy began a career of teaching and working on her Master’s Degree during the summer months. She was an elementary teacher for forty-seven consecutive years beginning in 1931. She taught her first eleven years in Keith County rural schools and the remaining thirty-six years in Ogallala West Ward Elementary School. She enjoyed art, painting and was a beautiful penman.
Dorothy was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, the Nebraska Education Association, the Ogallala Branch of University Women and the Ogallala branch of the Retired Teacher’s Association.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Sylvester, Ferdinand and Martin; and four sisters, Josephine Koelzer, Mary, Amelia and Clara Wellman. She is survived by four nieces, two nephews, three grand nephews, two grand nieces and several cousins.
Rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 10th at St. Luke’s Catholic Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial with Fr. Bryan Ernest as celebrant. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery. A memorial to St. Luke’s Catholic Church has been established in her memory. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the Gubser Funeral Home and at the church prior to services on Saturday.
