GEORGE E. VASA, 89 of Ogallala, NE, passed away Friday, May 22, 2015 at Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala.
George was born April 15, 1926 at Ogallala, Nebraska to John and Marie (Sibal) Vasa. He grew up in the sandhills of Arthur County with his 7 siblings. George graduated from Ogallala High School.
Following his education, George entered the U.S. Army and served at the tail-end of the Korean War. After his discharge, George returned to the Arthur and Ogallala areas where he farmed as well as owned and operated several businesses. His life was blessed with 3 sons, Stephen, David and Brian. George would later move to Ohio for several years, before returning to Ogallala to be closer to family.
George was gregarious, and always wore a smile. His personality was easy to love, and he always thrived when he had a chance to interact with people. Whatever he was doing in life, his gift of being able to genuinely connect with people served him well.
George was an avid softball player, and was a skillful left-handed pitcher. He enjoyed bowling and playing on softball teams into his 70's, before he decided to call it quits. While in Ohio, George was honored as the oldest active employee in all Ohio Sam's Clubs at that time.
In earlier years, George had been a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala, and had been active in the Knights of Columbus.
George was preceded in death by his son, David; grandsons, Zachary and Daniel; brothers, Ben, Bob, Bill and John; and sister, Lucille O'Connor.
Survivors include his 2 sons, Stephen (Deborah) Vasa of Lincoln, Brian (Nicki) Vasa of Ogallala; 6 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; sister, Agnes Moritz (Melvin) of Sutherland; brother, Stan Vasa of Lincoln; former daughter-in-law, Cindy Warren of Gering; along with many other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in his memory which will later be directed toward the wonderful staff at the Indian Hills Manor who provided George such excellent and attentive care. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Prairie Hills Funeral Home Chapel with Father Bryan Ernest officiating. Memorial book signing will be on Friday, May 29, 2015 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Prairie Hills Funeral Home.
