Gloria Kay McCabe

Gloria Kay McCabe, 84, of Big Springs, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Gloria was born on September 17, 1940, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Ernest and Olive (Criste) Gideon. She attended rural school before graduating from Cardinal High School. She attended college locally before going on to earn her credential as a dental assistant, which was a job she truly loved.

Gloria married Gary Coleman on October 31, 1958, and though the marriage would end in the mid-1960s, they were blessed with three children.

On December 29, 1966, Gloria married John McCabe in Kahoka, Missouri, and they enjoyed nearly 40 years together. The couple moved several times across the country, living in such places as Texas and California before settling in Douds, Iowa. After John's passing in 2004, Gloria eventually relocated to Big Springs, Nebraska, where she rekindled a lifelong friendship with Danny Johnston, and the two enjoyed 20 years together.

Gloria was known for her keen organizational skills, love of travel, and passion for sewing. She and Danny frequented Sierra Vista, Arizona, and Southeast Iowa to enjoy time with friends and family. They formed deep connections wherever they went. Gloria was a sharp, detailed, and meticulous planner, ensuring their travels were seamless.

Gloria had a deep love for her family and cherished the time she got to spend with them. She wasn't the type to complain and reliably avoided the spotlight, yet her absence leaves an unmistakable void. She will be sorely missed by family and friends alike.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John McCabe; her son, Marshall Ray Coleman; daughter, Christine Coleman; and infant son, Reginald Coleman.

Gloria is survived by Danny Johnston of Big Springs, Nebraska; his children and grandchildren of Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado, which Gloria considered her own; Her daughter-in-law, JoAnn Coleman; Her grandchildren, Jonathan Coleman (Jessi Lanfranco) and Stephen (Shelby) Coleman, Corryne Campbell; and great-grandchildren Alaura and Stryker Sickles; Solomon and Stiorra Coleman all of New London, IA along with many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services and inurnment will take place in Iowa at a later date.
