HARVEY "DEAN" CAREY, 73 of Ogallala, NE, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2015 at the Ogallala Community Hospital.
Dean was born April 13, 1942 at Woodward, OK to Ralph and Estella (Handley) Carey. He attended school in Forgan, OK and Eads, CO.
Following his schooling, Dean became a plumber, and he followed the work anywhere it took him, primarily working on schools and hospitals. Dean eventually settled down in Holyoke, CO in the late 1960's.
In 1986, Dean married Donna Waterman at Greeley, CO. In 1999, the couple moved to Ogallala to be closer to family and enjoy the lake. They also became known in the area for the watermelon and cantaloupe that they sold for over 20 years.
Dean loved playing in the local APA pool leagues. He was a skilled player, and even got to travel to Las Vegas with his team to compete in the APA National Team Championships. Dean was an avid Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies fan. He also greatly enjoyed riding his motorcycle when he got the chance.
Dean was a member of the Moose Club in Ogallala, as well as the APA Pool League.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gregory in 1977; grandson, Jeremy Young; granddaughter, Airiana; 2 brothers, Harold and Hershel Carey; and 2 sisters, Irma Carey and Ellen Harris Carey.
Survivors include his wife, Donna of Ogallala; 4 daughters, Shari (Kendall) Knight of Holyoke, CO, Annette Hardman of Denver, CO, Theresa Young of FL, Kimberly Carey of CO; 7 stepchildren, Tina (Jason) Hornkohl of Ogallala, Johnny Serna of Ft. Collins, CO, Theresa (Saul) Valverde of Millikin, CO, Julie Serna of Millikin, CO, Janie (Johnny) Medeles of Akron, CO, Maria Serna of Yuma, CO, Isabelle Serna of Akron, CO; 2 brothers, Hubert (Myrtle) Carey of Alco, NV, Butch Carey of Craig, CO; sister, Evelyn (Clifford) Morgan of Canyon City, CO; sister-in-law, Clara Mae Carey of La Junta, CO; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in his memory. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com, where the service will also be streamed live for those unable to attend.
Memorial services will be held on June 30, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Prairie Hills Funeral Home chapel with John Long officiating. Interment of cremains will be in the Ogallala Cemetery. Visitation for memorial book signatures will be on June 29th from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Prairie Hills Funeral Home.
