KENNETH "RED" HEIDEMANN, 90 of Big Springs, passed away February 27, 2020, at the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.
Red was born September 3, 1929, at Big Springs, Nebraska, to John and Alma (Holtmeier) Heidemann. He was baptized on September 22, 1929 at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Julesburg Co. and confirmed into his faith on May 14, 1944 at Zion Lutheran Church in Big Springs Ne. He graduated from Big Springs High School with the class of 1947. After graduation he continued working in the family machine shop, which was then located on the family farm.
In 1950, Red entered the US Navy, serving as an Engineman on the USS Tortuga and USS LST 819 before his honorable discharge in 1953. On November 26, 1955, Red married Geraldine "Gerry" Sauers at the Zion Lutheran Church in Big Springs. Their union was blessed with four children, Mark, Todd, Ryan, and Jodi. Red continued work at the Heidemann Machine Shop, which he co-owned by that time, and had expanded and moved to town.
Red possessed a seemingly tireless work ethic. He could always be found working at the shop. He enjoyed working on engines, carburetors and selling parts. And if you needed anything on Sunday, he would always help you out. In the evenings he looked forward to reading the Omaha World Herald paper. The Sunday comics was a favorite of his. Aside from work and family, Red's faith and church life were fundamental to him. He taught Sunday School for many years, even serving as the superintendent of the program for a time.
Red was preceded in death by his wife, Gerry; brothers, Loren, Leo, and John; 2 sisters, Irene Huey-Case and Viola Rochlitz.
Survivors include his children, Mark (Shelle) Heidemann of Big Springs, Todd (Brenda) Heidemann of Brule, Ryan Heidemann of Big Springs, and Jodi (Dayton) Christensen of Big Springs; four grandchildren, Chelsey, Ashley, Brittney, and Cameron; five great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Olivea, Peyton, Eleanor, and Grant; along with many other relatives and friends.
