KENNETH STAPLES, 89 of Ogallala, passed away Friday, June 22, 2018, at Indian Hills Healthcare Community in Ogallala.
Ken was born Aug 26, 1928, at Richards, Colorado to Albert "AJ" and Rosella (Mendenhall) Staples. He graduated from Arthur High School.
Ken entered the U.S. Air Force during Korea and was stationed at Pensacola, Florida. On September 13, 1953, Ken married Lela Derr at Ogallala. They made their home in Fairbanks, Alaska while Ken was stationed there for two years. Following his discharge from the service, Ken returned to Arthur, where he helped his father in his construction business. Ken and Lela were blessed with four children, Greg, Bret, Rocky, and Julie. In the mid-1960's, the family moved to Atwater, California, where Ken started a custom agricultural covering business. He continued in this endeavor until his retirement and relocation to Nebraska in 2002, subsequent to his sons taking over the business.
Ken loved fishing, rodeos, playing cards, and telling stories. He was fortunate enough to get to travel a bit throughout his lifetime, which was something he enjoyed. Ken was always a cowboy at heart and was rarely seen without his cowboy hat. Though he hadn't lived in the sandhills for quite some time, he always maintained an appreciation for his roots and looked back on his upbringing with fondness.
Ken was preceded in death by his three sons, Greg, Rocky, and Bret; brother, Don; and a sister, Janet Magnuson.
Survivors include his wife, Lela of Ogallala; daughter, Julie Staples of Ogallala; daughters-in-law, Debbie Staples of Ardmore, OK and Karen Staples Marques of Atwater, CA; grandchildren, Joseph Staples of Don Pedro, CA, Melanie Staples Morris of Atwater, CA, and Jenna Staples of Ardmore, OK; two brothers, Maurice (Gladyth) Staples of Ogallala, Jim (Alice) Staples of Englewood, CO; sister, Nadean (Gerald) Chandler of Sarben; sister-in-law, Nita Staples of Holdrege; along with many other relatives and friends.
