Leona Anna Armstrong, age 87 of Big Springs, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 15th at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Brule with Pastor Jon Dickmander officiating. Burial will be at the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery south of Maxwell at 2:30 p.m. (CDT).
Leona was born January 8, 1926, three miles west of Brule, the daughter of Henry D. and Anna (Schmidt) Harms. She was baptized in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Big Springs on January 24, 1926 and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Brule in May 28, 1939. She attended grade school at Lincoln Highway School in District 31 and graduated from the Brule High School with the Class of 1943.
Following her graduation she worked as a bookkeeper for J.C. Penney in Ogallala. On May 5, 1947 she married Ernest Armstrong at Oberlin, Kansas. They made their first home north of Brule before moving southwest of Brule where they were engaged in farming. In 1984 they moved to Big Springs to reside.
“Scoot” as she was called, enjoyed books, antiques, genealogy and cooking. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Brule and a member of the Flatlanders and Trailblazers antique car clubs.
Survivors include one son, Ron and wife Betty Armstrong of Brule; two granddaughters, Valerie Armstrong of Montgomery, Alabama and Victoria Armstrong of Wichita Falls, Texas; one sister Valera and husband Don Parks of Northglenn, Colorado; a sister in law, Arlene Armstrong of Chappell; and many, many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ernest; and a sister, Margaret.
Memorials may be given to the Big Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Unit or the Donor’s Choice in her memory. Online condolences may be sent at gubserfuneralhome.com.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Gubser Funeral Home and at the church prior to services on Friday. Gubser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
