Lynndon Carl Walker, 66, a tender soul, was escorted to Heaven on June 3, 2021, from the Perkins County Hospital in Grant.
Lynndon, who was referred to as "Lynn" or "Carl," depending on the relationship, was born October 6, 1954, to Gerald and Ima Jean (Hall) Walker at Lexington, Nebraska. Carl was blessed with an older sister, Sandy, who mothered him throughout his youth and came to be joined by two brothers, Mark and Donny, to share childhood with. The family moved to Greeley, CO, and Paxton, NE, before settling in Ogallala.
Following his education, Carl made his home at Lincoln. Carl married Pat Snider in the early 1990s, and by that union, gained four step children, Julie, Joe, Gordon, and John Snider. Carl was a hard worker and provided for his family by driving garbage trucks for Carter Sanitation.
Following the end of his marriage, Carl faced a cancer diagnosis in 2001 that necessitated serious treatments riddled with adverse side effects. After losing his hair to treatments, Carl decided never to cut it again once it grew back. In 2012, he returned to Ogallala to help his sister and mother. Eight years later, Carl moved to Concordia, KS, with the intent to start anew. A second cancer diagnosis in May of 2021 necessitated Carl's return to Ogallala, this time to live with his sister, whose "mothering" he welcomed, and Carl's life would seemingly come full circle.
Carl's last days were spent on a meaningful trip to Red River, NM, and at home, filled with long talks on the porch until he could no longer talk. Carl's life had been one full of challenges and adversity in a cycle of being a caregiver and then being the cared-for. Carl's final and ultimate caregiver was one he'd chosen for himself personally, and Jesus came to move him home at the appointed time, just like He'd promised.
Carl had a work ethic that never quit, and he took pride in the work he did. For those that took a chance on hiring a guy with hair long enough to be cast in Duck Dynasty came the reward of loyalty and dependability. He'd worked at Rodeway Inn, Ogallala Livestock Auction Market Inc, and Travel Centers of America. While a learning disability had obstructed him from graduating high school, Carl taught himself to read and became an avid reader of westerns. He loved to fish and had a passion for travel, even if just going on a long car ride around his favorite fishing hole, Lake Mcconaughy. Carl was a bit of a gamer and had collected the Call of Duty series of war games until he learned about apps on his cellphone, which became the flavor of the month. Carl loved to watch TV and movies and staying up to date on current events in the news.
Carl loved to gab and had an excellent sense for adding an occasional embellishment or two. His brand of advice always came free and typically was backed by his personal experience guarantee. Most people that met Lynndon Carl came away with an appreciation and liking for him and his simple ways. Ever the helper and giver, caretaker, and genuine friend, he will be sorely missed by those who knew him.
Carl is survived by his big sister, Sandy (Ron) Harrison of Ogallala; his baby brother, Donny (Rose) Gillespie of Miami, AZ. Stepsisters, Tammy Plunkett of Cheyenne, WY and Dani (Robin) Plunkett of Julesburg, CO; stepbrothers, Mike Plunkett of Ogallala and stepdaughter, Julie Snider and stepsons, Joe and Gordon Snider, all of Lincoln, NE. His aunt, Grace (George) Walters of Paxton, NE. Nieces, Shelby Jones of Lincoln, NE, Tonya (Stan) Alexander of Morrison, OK, Natasha Tupper of Omaha, NE, Jacinda (Benito) Morales of Aurora, NE, Ariel (Efren) Guaderrama of Omaha, NE, Dana Gillespie, Stephanie Gillespie both of Miami, AZ. Nephews John (Billie) Walker of Ault, CO, Dr. Clint Harrison and his dear friend John Snyder of Albuquerque, NM, and Ryan Baxter of Miami, AZ. Also, 16 step-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, several great-nieces and nephews, and a lot of cousins.
Carl is preceded in death by his grandparents Darrold and Miriam Hall, his parents Ima Jean and Pete Hillyer and Gerald and wife Mary Walker, brother Mark and wife Sue Walker, Uncles Donald, and wife, Yvette Hall, Ronald Hall, Bob VanVleet, his aunts, Sheryl Lawrence and Patricia, and husband Harold Schnorr and nephew Mark Walker Jr. and stepson, John Snider.
Services for Lynndon Carl Walker will be combined with his mother's (Ima Jean Hillyer) service on July 3, 2021, at 10:30 am at the Church of Christ in Ogallala, NE, with Bobby Brueggeman officiating. No interment is planned at this time.
Prairie Hills Funeral Home of Ogallala assisted the Walker family.
