Maurice was born December 22, 1937, at Plainville, KS, to Albert "AJ" and Rosella (Mendenhall) Staples. The family moved from Kansas early in his life to Colorado, and eventually to Arthur, Ne. He graduated from Arthur High School with the class of 1957.
He married his high school sweetheart, Gladyth Wiseman at Arthur in 1958, on Groundhog Day. Early on in their marriage, they moved around to quite a few places, due to Maurice's work with the dept. of roads. In 1961, he began operating the Wiseman Ranch north of Arthur and continued to do so until his "retirement". Ranching was his passion and being a Cattleman was his born and bred nature. In 1995, He sold the ranch in Arthur and retirement didn't sit well with him, so he decided to move to Holdrege to be closer to family, before returning to Arthur to sell stock feed. When full-time working was no longer an option, Maurice and Gladyth relocated to Ogallala in 2002. Upon arriving in the area, the couple spent another 5 years working for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, which Maurice especially enjoyed.
Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers Donald (Nita), Kenneth, and Jimmie Staples, and his sisters Nadean Chandler and Jeanette (Oren) Magnuson.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years Gladyth; daughter Karen (Rondell) Cochran; grandsons Levi (Tammy), T.J. (Krista), and Zane (Colette); step-grandsons Shawn (Jeannine), Shane (Whitney), and Shadd (Amber), as well as all 10 of his loving great-grandchildren.
