RONALD L. JOHNSON, 87, of Ogallala, formerly of Big Springs, passed away April 14, 2020, at the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.
Ron was born April 22, 1932, at Deuel County, Nebraska, to Russell and Ethel (Renquist) Johnson. He graduated from Deuel County High School and subsequently entered the U.S. Army, where Ron served in Korea. During his time in the service, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal w/1 Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
On March 2, 1952, Ron married Beverley (Wallace) Johnson, and their union was blessed with three children, Barry, Terry, and Sherri. Ron farmed with his dad for a few years before he and Bev relocated to Lewellen to farm. The couple eventually bought a home in Big Springs, and Ron worked hauling propane for Sample Brothers, Hershey Propane, and later, Sapp Brothers. Later in life, Ron enjoyed working with his son in the office at Kenfield Electric, which he did for several years, retiring in 1994. Ron and Bev enjoyed many years of camping and spent three winters in Arizona. Ron was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in his late 70's, and so the last ten years of life were difficult. It is comforting to know that Ron is now free from his ailments, and in the presence of the Lord.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Patricia Johnson and a brother-in-law, Ed Ziegler.
Survivors include his wife, Beverley of Ogallala; children, Barry (Loretta) Johnson of Big Springs, Terry Johnson (Janet Hartman) of Chadron, and Sherri Soper (Chris Schrotberger) of Grant; eight grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Karen Ziegler of Papillion, Debra (Dr. Michael) Dehning of Omaha, along with many other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in Ronald's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com, where a recording of Ron's service will be posted for later viewing.
A private family graveside service will be held at the Big Springs Cemetery.
Prairie Hills Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge of arrangements.
